Hitler referred to atheism as a Judeo-Bolshevik plot to destroy Germany. I’d be very careful in listing him as atheist, but I guess ideologues don’t care about nuance; they just want handy simplistic narratives to frame the enemies as hideously irredeemable.
Gurn: Many members of the Orthodox Church were sent to Gulags during Stalin’s anti-religious campaigns. I don’t think it can be said that he was pro-Christian.
I’d disagree with BPG’s inference that atheism inherently leads to this, because political dogma was at play, but I don’t like the stripping of complexity to frame it as being “Stalin was actually pro-Christian” because it makes religion look bad and it removes an atheist of culpability in persecution.
