“I have some clear and perhaps potentially controversial takes on the political scene in the USA”
Now I am tempted, so that I can get on my soapbox and run.
For me, there can only be one clear preferable outcome for the US election as someone who is liberally minded. Sure, Biden and the Democrats have faults, but anything is preferable to the moronic, totalitarian idolising fool in the White House who has botched their pandemic response up royally, aims to destroy every institution in the States which is remotely public service, often so that he can stay in power, is corrupt and has so many allegations of sexual misconduct.
I am done with having an overgrown manchild as president, and the appeasers behind him in the Republicans anywhere near power. The man doesn’t respect democracy, doesn’t respect science and doesn’t respect anyone other than those who pander to him, because he is a narcissist. And I am not pretending Biden is just as immoral as Trump, like the hardcore Bernie fans like to pretend, because he’s not an ideologically pure progressive. Nor am I going to pretend that ‘SJW’ university students making a fuss over nothing on campus or antifa are some big menace we need to support Trump over, like the ‘classical liberals’ pretend, when there are thugs with no badges on brutalising protesters who are being peaceful. Heck, I am not going to whinge too much about ‘the squad’ who get the ire of the right when the Republicans are dominated by fundamentalist Christian nutters, Ayn Ran zealots and fronted by a corrupt would-be tyrant with little values beyond an expanding need to be loved and throws tantrums when he can’t get it.
I have many thoughts of the American situation and little of it is positive. Not because of anti-Americanism, because I think the USA has the potential to be more moral than its superpower rivals, and greatly admire many of its more liberal (typically, but not exclusively) figures who have pushed the country forwards. However, it is in a bad place right now, a place I want it to recover from. It is not helped by a media which sets a low bar for Trump compared to Biden, the credence given to nonsense about Benghazi while there is nonchalance about Trump not caring about Russian bounties on American soldiers. The political scene is dominated by loudmouthed clickbait dressed as reality, and it is predominantly from one wing, yet we’re expected to behave as if both are going down the swanny, and we’re not expected to criticise one side too much in case we hurt the sensitive feelings of one of the MAGA heads who support the goon in charge. WHile I think we should need to reach out to swing voters and those who may have voted Trump, I am not going to do it by hiding criticism of the mess of Trump, nor those who support him wholeheartedly, because the fact that someone clearly unfit for office has supporters.
