I have thus far avoided commenting on the subject of the A Level debacle as I am so bloody angry I didn’t think I was able to put together a coherent post. However!
This action has seen what we all know to be an underhand and divisive government sink to yet another low. To quote the late Aneurin Bevan “No amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party. So as far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.”
He said that in 1948, and so to bring things up do date I’ll quote you Dominic Cummings – “A child’s performance has more to do with genetic makeup than the standard of his or her education.”
Now this is interesting because it is basically eugenics and goes some way to explaining why pupils in private schools had their grades accepted or even upped whilst those in the state sector witnessed the opposite.
The Conservatives have been slapping teachers in the face since the Thatcher era (I was teaching in a state school during the ministry of Kenneth Baker), but this isn’t so much a slap in the face as a full force kick in the teeth with a safety boot!
What is being said here is that we (the government) don’t trust you (the teachers). You are over estimating these grades to make yourselves look better teachers than you actually are. So we will downgrade your predictions to teach you a lesson.
It is about control. In fact this government is all about control. If it were a business it would be seen as bullying in the workplace. We have already seen it in the NHS. Now it’s the turn of education. I wonder which sector will be next?
I could continue for hours about the wasted time spent putting together these predicted grades. About working life being as far removed from an A Level exam as the Tories are from reality, but I won’t. I’ll pour a glass of Rioja and put on some music.
