If you think things will be smoother when the transition period is over I have a bridge to sell.
Part of the reason why the French can be less cooperative over this is because they don’t want to have overcrowded refugee camps to deal with. When part of the EU there was an incentive for cooperation, but now we are out they will care less about cooperating on this and the EU wouldn’t be so bothered about refugees and migrants leaving the EU, so will do nothing to stop it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this is happening in larger numbers now because France are becoming less bothered about cooperation now we are on the way out and there is no perceived harm to them to cooperate for the remaining few months.
We can argue about the morals of this, and I am not framing their actions positively, but the point remains that the signs are that leaving the EU is causing us bigger issues here. And, as everyone who voted Brexit knew exactly what they voted for, I can only conclude that this was one of the accepted outcomes, because this was warned about prior to June 2016.
