Three Scunthorpe fans were amongst five people arrested by police at Saturday’s League One clash with Bury at Gigg Lane.

One home team supporter was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a further on suspicion of pitch encroachment.

The three Scunthorpe fans were detained on suspicion of pitch encroachment.

A Great Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 12.45pm on Saturday 1 October, police were called to reports of a disturbance at a pub on Haymarket Street, Bury.

“The incident involved supporters of Scunthorpe United, ahead of the League One football match with Bury, which kicked-off at Gigg Lane at 3pm.

“Away supporters were escorted by police to the stadium, and officers were later requested to be present inside the ground following repeated acts of disorder.

“Police escorted Scunthorpe supporters away from the ground after the match, when there was disorder involving home and away fans.

“The vast majority of fans were there to watch the match and enjoy their day at the football.

“However, a minority were intent on causing disorder and police were forced to act accordingly.

“Four people were arrested on suspicion of pitch encroachment and one Bury supporter was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder after the match.”
