This afternoon Scunthorpe United confirmed the loan signing of fan favourite Ivan Toney until the end of the season.
Toney, who built a strong rapport with the Iron faithful at the end of last season will wear Paddy Madden’s old number 9 shirt. The striker scored 7 goals in 17 appearances for Scunthorpe last season.
Iron boss Graham Alexander spoke to the Scunthorpe Telegraph about how the ‘surprise’ deal came about.
“We had been speaking to Newcastle about the possibilities because we had seen that Ivan was not starting a lot of games at Wigan,” Alexander told the Telegraph.
“I was sitting at home and got a phone call from his agent saying Newcastle had recalled him and asked ‘do you want him in tomorrow, do you want to sign him?’
“I said ‘Yes Please’ and that was it! It was a really quick call out of the blue and I was on the phone to Ivan within the next 15 minutes.
“We spoke about where he was, what was expected of him and did he fancy it and he was really keen to get it done.
“He came in this morning, got the paperwork done and got into the swing of things straight away. It was all really quick and a nice surprise on my day off.”
The deal should see Toney available for the Iron’s clash with Portsmouth this Saturday, subject to FA ratification.
