Canavan & Ness nearing comebacks

Iron boss Mark Robins has confirmed that defender Niall Canavan is back in training and is likely to be involved in the squad for the FA Cup game with Southend next weekend.

He has been missing since the opening day after picking up an ankle injury at Burton Albion.

“Hopefully we will have Niall available and in contention for the game against Southend. That will be the case if there are no setbacks,” Robins the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

“It’s a huge plus for us. We lost him in the first game, so he’s been out for quite a while – a lot of games have gone past and we’ve missed his presence. I think he’s a good player.

“We’ve brought in a really capable player to play in the same position he would and he has done absolutely brilliant for us.

“But while we haven’t missed someone for the position, we’ve missed the person. I think Niall coming back will be a big plus for us in the run up to Christmas and beyond.”

He also confirmed that midfielder Jamie Ness is close to a return to the first team squad.

“Nessie is training again.

“There are other players to factor in to that as well. Andrew Boyce has come back in, although he’s got a knee injury at the moment, and we’ve got Charlie Goode, who’s been in and around the first team all season.

“With Nessie back in contention and Luke Williams looking like he’s almost ready to step back in the signs are really positive”.
