Can the Iron gain promotion in 2018/19?

After missing out on promotion via the play-offs in May, Scunthorpe United will be aiming to go one better this time around, as optimism begins to build at Glanford Park ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Manager Nick Daws has had a busy close-season so far, having recruited five new faces, including highly-rated young forward Olufela Olomola, who arrived from Southampton on a free transfer.

The club have also invested in non-league talent, prizing 23-year-old forward Andy Dales away from Evostik Northern Premier League side Mickleover Sports for an undisclosed fee. The former Derby County trainee notched an impressive 23 goals in the most recent campaign.

Meanwhile, one of last season’s standout performers and fans’ favourite, Hakeeb Adelakun, headed south to join Bristol City, with the fee set to be decided via a tribunal.

The Iron begin the new season with a trip to the West Midlands to face newly-promoted Coventry City. The Sky Blues returned to League One at the first time of asking, following a 3-1 play-off final victory over Exeter.

Mark Robins’ side will be quietly harbouring promotion ambitions of their own, along with the likes of Sunderland, Burton Albion, Plymouth, Charlton Athletic, as well as Fleetwood Town – as the former Newcastle and QPR midfielder Joey Barton takes his first steps into management.
