Fanatical Rotherham fan Peter Nattress has been speaking with Iron Bru contributor Mark Chapman and gives Iron fans the lowdown on new signing Richie Smallwood.
Hello Peter. Thanks for talking to us. First and foremost, how has the news of the departure gone down amongst Rotherham fans?
Not well! Most people I know are baffled by the decision – not many can understand it.
Can you put your finger on why it’s been allowed to happen?
I think Stubbs wants to adopt a pass & move game here at Rotherham & wants younger players to implement it. It appears that he doesn’t see Smallwood as a player to fit that criteria. He also used the ‘couldn’t guarantee him game time’ excuse so his departure sadly seemed inevitable.
New managers will always want their own players I guess. It seems odd that Stubbs stated early last week that he only wanted 100% committed players at Rotherham, and the ones who weren’t 100% committed could leave. From what I’m hearing he’s exactly the kind of player he wants. Makes it even more bizarre..
It was the proverbial bolt from the blue as they say. I can’t help but think being an older head he might have told Stubbs some uncomfortable truths after the Barnsley fiasco (4-0 defeat) but that is purely my opinion, no basis for it, just a gut instinct.
A possible clash of personalities then. So what kind of player can Scunny fans expect to see gracing the hallowed turf at Glanford Park?
An honest professional who can do the ugly tackle in the middle of the park, not blessed with pace and gets a nose bleed in the opposition penalty area! He does his best work as a defensive midfielder where he’s very strong. Plus he had the courage to step up and take the decisive penalty in the playoff final and scored it.
He sounds quite similar to midfielders we already have here such as Bishop & Dawson – he should fit in well! It sounds like he’s not here to sit on the bench either so decent competition all around. The majority of Scunthorpe fans are very confident for the season ahead with an extremely strong squad in place; with this addition to our squad, would you back up that confidence?
I went to the pre-season friendly at Glanford Park and was very impressed with Scunthorpe – everybody seemed to know what was expected of them and I’m not surprised you’ve started the season so well.
So going on what you’ve seen of us so far, do you feel will he make us a much stronger side?
It may take Richie a couple of games to gel into the team, but he definitely won’t make you a weaker unit, that’s for sure!
I’m sure Scunny fans will be delighted to hear that! Finally, how do you see your own season panning out following the miracle escape of last season?
I think we’ll scrape by again but mostly because there are several clubs in this league where the fans have issues with the owners which in turn affects the players on the pitch – last season’s escape was phenomenal, undefeated in 14 – we were in dreamland!

Iron fans may get their first chance to see Smallwood this weekend as United face Southend at Glanford Park, with odds available on all good betting apps.
Following our chat with Peter, life-long Rotherham fan Lee Bush (@Leebush23Bush) also had this to say on Smallwood:
“You have a very hard working player who’s good on the ball, breaks up play and always gives 100 per cent! All the fans of our club are not happy he’s been sent out as he’s just the type we need. The lad is championship standard for sure!
He was on loan with us at League One level and won us promotion. He was immense.
You look like you’ve got a fantastic side down there at Scunthorpe this season!”
