Mansfield 0-2 United

League Two leaders Scunthorpe made it nine games unbeaten as they eased to a 2-0 win at Mansfield to complete the double over the Stags.

Goalkeeper Sam Slocombe made a good save to turn away a low goalbound shot from Matt Rhead and also watched Rhead and Lee Stevenson smash close range efforts into the stand as the Iron withstood some early pressure from the hosts.

However it didn’t take long for the Iron to take the lead. A clipped ball forward was chested back by Winnall towards the returning Iron legend Paul Hayes, who lashed a 25 yard volley into the top corner, giving Marriott no chance infront of the Iron’s 1200 travelling fans.

Sam Winnall prodded a chance straight at Alan Marriott in the 27th minute before the keeper tipped away a Christian Ribeiro cross that threatened to creep in before Canavan headed over from close range.

After the break, the visitors had a couple of chances to kill the game off. Winnall raced through but was unlucky with a left footed effort before Dave Syers saw his volley skid inches wide after good work from Hawkridge.

It was all over with 15 minutes remaining when Hayes grabbed his second goal of the game with a powerful close range effort.
