Byrne set to leave Oldham

Former Iron captain Cliff Byrne has been told by Oldham Athletic he is free to find another club following a loan spell with the Iron.

Byrne returned to Oldham before the Christmas break after struggling to break into the United team with Eddie Nolan and Christian Ribeiro impressing in the full back positions.

Oldham boss Gary Johnson insists Byrne is still part of the squad, but can leave to ensure first team football.

“He is part of the group, though I don’t see him getting too many games for us,” said Johnson.

“Cliff is a good professional and it is probably best for him to move on.”
